Everyone loves old school LL Bean so much that the outdoor heritage company has started experimenting with handpicked vintage “dropsâ€. LL Bean’s next semi-sustainable step is to join frequent partner Todd Snyder for a very limited selection of handmade Bean boots and bags from surplus military waste.
Hard-wearing outerwear is never really trendy, but LL Bean is particularly well positioned now. Readiness is on the rise – unrelated to #BamaRush – and while its signature boot is no longer out of stock annually, it remains a perennial bestseller in trendy cities and rural areas that DGAF talks about trends.
For Sndyer’s latest Bean drop, the New York designer remixed some of the aforementioned classic Bean Boots ($ 319) and tote bags ($ 249) with vintage canvas reused from military bags and tents, with original marks and wear intact. The result is beautiful one-of-a-kind accessories: the worn dull olive pairs perfectly with the utility basics from LL Bean.
Custom designs are only available through The Liquor Store’s Todd Snyder outpost in Manhattan’s Tribeca neighborhood. I’m sure a lot of Bean Heads wouldn’t mind getting a larger release of these pieces, but, at the same time, I understand the rationale for exclusivity.
Not only are there very few boots and bags for everyone, but this stuff is worth dealing with IRL. When you touch an item of clothing that has been carefully recycled, it makes a lot more sense than seeing it on a screen. Greg Lauren, who is familiar with regenerated militaria, would surely agree.
I don’t know if it’s fair to say that LL Bean has “a moment”, if you will, with the all-retro craze, but he’s uniquely positioned to ride the workwear wave. reappropriated for as long as it lasts.
