The Mets will be back in black in 2021, owner Steve cohen announced Monday during a Q&A with Mets.com
And for many fans who grew up in the days of black jerseys and caps, these uniforms bring nostalgia and star visions of the past.
Some traditionalist fans can do without it, so we’ll call it a mostly love / partial hate relationship.
But if you read the tea leaves earlier this offseason, it looked like the threads might be making a comeback. This return is now official.
And it will be a thrill for Shannon (@Miss_Met).
“I’ve always been a fan of black jerseys, mainly because I love the way they look. But more than that, they take me back to those early years when I got into baseball and became a real Mets fan,” Shannon told SNY. “Wright, Reyes, Beltran, Delgado. All the guys who helped me fall in love with the game – when I imagine them, they wear black.
“There was such swagger in those jerseys, attitude, demeanor. They were just cool. For the Mets, wearing them again, even if only once in a while, would be a childhood dream. . “
Mets players, including Pete Alonso, Dom smith, Marcus Stroman, and Jd davis, also pushed last year for the team to bring back the black uniforms.
And Cohen noticed it.
“There’s a lot of talk about these black jerseys,†Cohen told SNY’s Steve Gelbs in an exclusive interview earlier this offseason on Food Hot Frying Pan. “Looks like there are people who are fervent who want it, and then people who actually don’t want it. I think it’s probably more than people want it than don’t want it.
“I haven’t told the players about it. I want to make sure they get involved. And maybe we do it one night every now and then or something, just to shake it up.”
For Jeff DiMeglio, a fan who grew up during the Mike Piazza years, the return of black uniforms will be special.
“The black jerseys have always had a special place for me because they came out in 98 when the team really started putting them together,†said DiMeglio. “Piazza was the leader and the greatest infielder of all time was on the field for the Mets.
“There are so many good memories attached to them. They wore the black jerseys at night Bobby valentine came back with the painted mustache. “
The Mets wore the black jerseys and caps at home and on the road as part of their uniform rotation from 1998 to 2011, with “Mets†on the chest at home and “New York†on the road. There were two caps – one all black and one black with a blue beak.

When the Mets debuted the black jerseys and caps in 1998, they were crisp and a refreshing change of pace. And they of course coincided with arguably the funniest Mets team in recent memory (the 1999 team) and the 2000 team that made it to the World Series.
But the inclusion of the color black in the other Mets jerseys (an unsightly drop shadow over the classic pinstripe jersey and their road gray) and the eventual near disappearance of the traditional Mets blue cap from the rotation ultimately made black swimsuits and crowns an unwelcome sight.
With the black jerseys and caps out of the rotation for a decade, and with the Mets uniforms (orange, blue and white only) now among the most impeccable in baseball, the return of the black jerseys and caps will be perfect – as an alternative that is. worn from time to time, and without any other jersey or cap in the rotation being impacted.
And listening to Cohen on Monday night, he said the jerseys will only be worn occasionally this season. We are therefore on the right track.
During the 2020 season, Alonso was one of the strongest supporters of the return of black uniforms, tweeting in April:
“Black plains are the most dops! No cap. That would be a mentality and an attitude. Orange and blue accents are like city lights in the night sky. So many great Mets wore black. My only question is : why not ? “
During this time, Jd davis and Dom smith also expressed support for the return of the black United during an episode of The Cookie Club on SNY.tv.
For Mets fan Amanda Childs, the return of black uniforms will be a welcome sight.
“As a Mets fan born in the late ’80s, the sleek black jerseys have a lot of nostalgia,†Childs said. “Some of my all-time favorite Mets rocked the black jerseys, and it would be fun for a new generation of Mets fans to see them worn again. Plus, the orange and blue really stand out from the black!”
Added Childs’ brother, Brett:
“For a generation of Mets fans who grew up with Mike Piazza, then David wright and Jose reyes, black jerseys represent a time of excitement and energy. It feels like we’re on the cusp of something similar and it would be great to see the Mets bring them back. “
