James Higgs, 33, called Rochester home after moving 80 miles south of St. Paul while in elementary school more than two decades ago.
With extensive experience in the craft beer and hospitality industry, he is currently the Events Coordinator for Early Bird Hospitality Group, working with Cameo and Café Relish.
With over 5,000 Instagram followers, some may recognize Higgs by his social media nickname @passthehops, as well as his presence on the 5 Mics Pod podcast, where he joins four other locals each week to discuss a wide range of topics such as equity, relationships, sports, news and everything in between.
Outside of podcasting and hop fermentation, Higgs’ hobbies include traveling and working out, and said “that balance is what I need for stability.”
“Through social media,” he said, “I give people the opportunity to see my life and what I do. It’s a lot of fun.”

Describe your style in three words.
Comfortable, versatile, unique.
What item from your wardrobe seems very unique to you?
My socks. People need to understand the importance of the sock!
The best purchase you’ve made and why?
My Adidas Yeezy 350 shoe. Besides the popularity of the silhouette, they are very comfortable, stylish and versatile – can be worn for any occasion.
What do you think is the big buck worth compared to the savings?
Splurge = shoes. In all the stores I go to, the shoe section is number one. To save on something, I would say accessories, you don’t need too much in my opinion.
What’s the most sentimental item you own?
My mother gave me a pair of socks a few Christmases ago. They are still in the same packaging she gave them to me.

Must-have Minnesota clothing?
If living in Minnesota has taught me one thing, it’s that the weather is unpredictable, so using the art of layers and sweaters is key. A good jacket is essential. I love denim jackets, the possibilities of wearing one are limitless.
Recent compliment you received?
“So I’m at the mall, trying to find the perfume you were wearing.” When it comes to cologne, a good smell goes a long way. I have a three-scent collection that is essential to my everyday clothes.
Can only save five clothes, which do you choose?
A Louis Vuitton belt, my Chelsea boots, Levi jeans, a hat, any of my gray hoodies.
Go-to shopping spots?
This has become difficult more recently due to COVID-19 and the surge in online shopping, but one local place I can usually find something is H&M.

Lots of options. Preparation is always key.
