Fashion week is back in full force, and there is a lot to see. Blink (or scroll too fast on Instagram) and you’ll miss the details: small bags, tall shoes, feathered hats, leather capes, and diamond dog collars. So, as part of a new series, Wow Moment, we’ll be highlighting things we’ve seen on the catwalks that have thrilled or mystified us.
PARIS – As fashion turned sexy, there was something refreshing about the sporty designs Dior offered during its spring show on Tuesday. Platform heels and super pointy toes? Difficult, says the Dior woman of 2022. She wears diving shoes.
Specifically, she wears high black or white boots, with toes dipped in a single neon color – yellow, orange, pink, green or blue – and traced with lines of the same color along the upper and around the foot. . (In the black versions, the neon tracing effect is very “Tron.â€) Or she is wearing Mary Jane flats in the same material and colourways.
Both versions of the shoe are made of neoprene (a non-biodegradable wetsuit fabric) with a one inch square heel.
During a preview of the collection on Monday, Dior Artistic Director Maria Grazia Chiuri said the stretchy nature of the sock-style boot feels like something between a boot and a sneaker on the foot.
Ms Chiuri isn’t the first to put snorkel or neoprene shoes on the catwalks (see Prada, Balenciaga, Christopher Kane), but what sets her versions apart is their connection to the 60s and 70s – l era of go-go boots, but also years when Dior was designed by Marc Bohan, whose signatures included the “slim look†and bright colors.
Ms. Chiuri credited Mr. Bohan with inspiring the collection. It turns out that the two creators have a common interest: “I love sports,†Ms. Chiuri said.
It was Mr. Bohan who presented the Christian Dior Sport line with a collection of ski clothing. (Today, Dior Sport is best known as a men’s fragrance.) In April 1962, when the New York Times reported that “the world famous Maison Dior”, known for its mink coats and ball gowns, had “aimed at sportswear,†he called the new ski equipment “fun and stylish.†In 1964 he described a nylon ski jacket protecting the face as giving “the wearer a slightly extra look. -atmospheric â€.
It was the same year the Times said, “No great fashions came out in 1964, but everyone had a great time.
If Ms Chiuri was hoping her neoprene shoes would resuscitate some of that fun – and Mr Bohan’s sporty and spatial aesthetic – she succeeded.
