Yesterday’s alumni game is proof we need these shirts

Last night the Flyers played their long-awaited (at least by myself) Hall of Fame celebration game, honoring new inductees Paul Holmgren and Rick Tocchet. The guest list of players and coaches included the likes of Eric Lindros and Danny Briere, and although sadly the match was not televised, we got quite a few highlights and photos via the social media accounts. team officials, including the aforementioned pair.

Now, we saw Lindros wear these black jerseys a number of times in the late 1990s, but Briere never wore the orange variation of this iconic style (he wore the black and white Reebok variations of the design which didn’t didn’t last very long). In fact, there were a few former Flyers who got the chance to wear 80s and 90s orange for the first time.

Which brings us to the point of interest, which we’re sure we can all agree on…

The Flyers MUST bring back these classic jerseys.

That’s not to say their current uniforms are bad. Far from there. It’s a clean, iconic design reminiscent of their 1970s glory days.

However, it was incredibly obvious from yesterday that the trio of black, white and orange jerseys the Flyers wore throughout the 80s, 90s and early mid-2000s were superior in almost every way. You couldn’t imagine most of the icons of this franchise in any other jersey era.

The colors of the black and orange variants stand out incredibly well and contrast with the white shoulders and the stripe of color that separates the top from the primary color. Whoever designed these jerseys clearly knew what they were doing, as they are some of the best in NHL history.

The next logical question to ask the Flyers, then (after bringing those jerseys back), is how we fans can officially buy some of ours. They’re available from sites such as Custom Throwback Jerseys (I’ve personally ordered a custom in both orange and black and can attest to their quality), although it would be nice if these classics were also available in the official team store. , and in the Wells Fargo Center store on a more regular basis.

Yesterday’s game was a treat for the spectators, no doubt helped by the classic kits, but mainly thanks to the players involved.
