CLEVELAND, Ohio – Washington’s football team has a new name: Commanders.

“This new identity embodies the most powerful aspects of Washington’s history by paying homage to the team’s rich history and championship culture, personified by mission-driven players who take command, forge success and break down barriers on and off the pitch,” the team explained in a press release.
Commanders replaces the team’s generic name that served as a placeholder for two seasons after the franchise finally retired the racist moniker it had used for the previous 87 years in 2020. The rebranding is the result of an 18-month process that included over 40,000 fan submissions. and surveys as well as focus groups and meetings with fans, players, alumni, community leaders and stakeholders, the team said.
The franchise retains its traditional burgundy and gold color scheme, but has introduced new uniforms, logos and wordmarks. Merchandise, including jerseys, t-shirts and hats featuring the new look, is already available for purchase on fanatics.com.
