Spurs reveal shirts for 50th anniversary season

As the Spurs enter their 50th anniversary season, the team will don jerseys reflecting generations of San Antonio sports culture. After weeks of speculation, Spurs unveiled the alternate shirt on Monday July 11.

George “The Iceman” Gervin was on hand for the unveiling of the new jersey. The look is reminiscent of the 1970s, the Hemisfair Arena era where Gervin played. “San Antonio” is spelled in a bend in capital letters down the center of the scoop neck jersey with the player’s number underneath.

The alternate jersey is the team’s designated classic edition. In August, Classic Edition jerseys were released for the Boston Celtics, New York Knicks and Golden State Warriors to celebrate the NBA’s 75th anniversary. LockerVision says each team is allowed five alternate jerseys per season. Classic Editions are reserved for team anniversaries or key moments in franchise history.

“The Spurs Classic Edition uniform is a symbolic way for us to honor our heritage, our players and our loyalty to the city of San Antonio while giving our fans what they’re asking for – we hear you,” Becky Kimbro, vice president of brand engagement for Spurs Sports & Entertainment, said in a statement. “Our team has been working for two years to make this shirt possible for our 50th anniversary and we hope our fans are just as excited as we are to see it on the pitch once again.”

Fans can get their hands on the new merchandise in September at Spurs Fan Shops and online in preparation for the team’s Golden Anniversary season. The jerseys are part of a larger commemorative collection which will include t-shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies, jackets, jerseys, caps and more.
