A Blenheim man accused of multiple counts of shoplifting hit a wall “like a child” during his arrest and custody, a court has heard.

Jeremy Mark Ching, 43, appeared in Blenheim District Court last week and admitted to robbing several businesses in the Upper South, including Macpac Nelson, Smith City Blenheim and Farmlands Blenheim.

Police facts summary said on May 27 at around 4:25 p.m. Ching entered Macpac on Trafalgar St in Nelson.

The summary said he was walking around looking for articles and trying to avoid the staff.

He walked behind a clearance rack in the store and pulled out an extra bag from his shoulder bag. He put a down jacket valued at $ 599.99 in the extra bag and walked out of the store without paying.

On June 10 at around 2:15 p.m., Ching entered Farmlands Blenheim, according to the summary.

While in the store, he went into the locker room and changed into a top, pants and boots.

He put what he was originally wearing in a bag and walked out of the store without paying. CCTV footage showed Ching getting into a car where a second person was waiting before leaving.

That same day at around 3:30 p.m., Ching entered the Blenheim warehouse.

While in the store, he placed electronic items valued at $ 715 in his shopping cart.

The summary indicated that he had moved to an area of ​​the store where he could not be seen and removed the security tags from the items in his shopping cart.

He then put the items in his bag and left the store.

Ching also flew to Smiths City on June 10, after placing various electrical appliances valued at $ 981.96 in his bag and left the store without paying.

A search of his vehicle resulted in the recovery of the stolen items, drug paraphernalia, a “checklist” and $ 80 in cash.

The second person driving the car has not been identified, according to the summary.

Ching appeared in Blenheim District Court via audio-visual link, where he sported a bright red plaster cast.

Asked by Judge Richard Russell about what he had done to himself, Ching said he was “acting like a child” when he first came into custody and hit a wall.

Judge Russell told him that “it probably wasn’t a good idea.”

Through his attorney, Ching pleaded guilty to the shoplifting charges.

The court heard that restorative justice was not appropriate for this type of offense.

Judge Russell remanded Ching on remand. He was to be sentenced on October 18.
