The Buffalo Sabers have been brought back to earth. After enjoying a 5-1-1 start to the 2021-2022 season, they have lost four straight games, one of them going into overtime against the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday.
However, there is a silver lining for fans. The lead pool is now full of Owen Power, Erik Portillo, Ryan Johnson, JJ Peterka, Jack Quinn, and more.
They also ultimately traded disgruntled ex-captain Jack Eichel.
Eichel was traded to the Vegas Golden Knights, with a third-round pick in 2023 last Thursday against forward Peyton Krebs, forward Alex Tuch, a protected top-10 first-round pick in 2022 and a pick from second round in 2023.
Tuch is a 25-year-old forward who scored 20 NHL goals with Vegas and a former first-round pick for the Minnesota Wild in 2014.
Tuch grew up as a fan of the Sabers. He’s from the Syracuse area and his family actually lived next door to longtime Saber, Tim Connolly.
Tuch said how much he loves the Sabers during his introductory press conference. He talked about watching Drury, Brière, Vanek, Campbell, Kaleta, etc. He also spoke about watching games with his dad and one of the photos the Sabers tweeted.
The photo shows Tuch in a red third jersey from the early to mid-2000s.
Tuch says he would like the Sabers to bring back those jerseys. Watch the video below (jump to 33 seconds).
I started looking at the Sabers around 98-99, when the team wore the black and red uniforms. I know many fans hold royal blue and gold as their number one jersey (I probably do too), but these black and red jerseys are special to me.
This is the time when I grew up. I didn’t do anything, just the fact that I was born when I was. The Sabers, however, have also had great success in these jerseys. They have made the playoffs in six of the nine seasons wearing them, with three appearances in the Eastern Conference Finals and one appearance in the Stanley Cup Final.
I think it would be great to bring them back for a special night out, or have them as an alternative, wearing them a handful of times during the season.
