Police patrolling Bishop’s Stortford town center arrested a shoplifter who had stolen clothes and cosmetics from three businesses, including a charity shop.

The suspect was snatched from the streets outside Boots the Chemist in Potter Street after stealing tweezers and hiding them in his jacket, verbally insulting staff as he left.

Police Inspector Mark Collins said two officers on patrol searched the suspect’s backpack and discovered cosmetics and toothbrushes also stolen from Boots, as well as clothing from Marks & Spencer and a polo shirt with a Oxfam label.

Boots staff saw a man acting suspiciously. He insulted the staff and left the store to turn right into Potter Street,’ Inspector Collins said. “At the same time, two police officers were walking around the city and they arrested the suspect for a search.”

A 57-year-old man has been charged.

Meanwhile, police who arrested an ‘erratic’ driver in Hadham Road discovered a transport of stolen goods from Waitrose worth over £3,000.

Champagne, alcoholic spirits and infant formula had been removed from the Northgate End store last Friday (June 24) at around 11.40am by a gang of four men and two women.

A 21-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman who also tested positive for cocaine have been arrested
