The Pittsburgh Penguins will add a sponsor crest to their black home jerseys starting next season, the team announced Tuesday.

The Penguins and Highmark have announced a multi-year deal that will feature the Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield patch on the jerseys’ upper right chest.

Highmark will be the first partner to display its logo on a Penguins game jersey in the first season of its NHL jersey advertising program.

“The Pittsburgh Penguins are a key part of the fabric of this community,” said Tom Doran, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Highmark Inc. “Their victories happen on and off the ice because they are equally champions of education, wellness and public service. Highmark is proud to team up with the Penguins and believes this partnership is an investment in the community.”

The team also announced that fans attending Thursday’s game against the Boston Bruins will receive a replica black jersey t-shirt featuring the new logo, courtesy of Highmark.

“As a founding partner of the Penguins, Highmark has contributed to our success on the ice and in the community,” said David Morehouse, team president and CEO. “Stitching the Highmark logo on our home jerseys is a testament to our long-term partnership and an opportunity to introduce this Pittsburgh brand to millions of viewers and social media followers around the world – and especially to our fans at home games at PPG Paints. Arena.”

The NHL Jersey Advertising Program allows up to two jersey sponsors per team when separate sponsors appear on home and away jerseys, beginning next season.

The Penguins plan announces an away jersey partner at a later date.
