Every man wanted to be him and every woman wanted to date him.
Henry Winkler played the iconic Arthur “Fonzie” Fonzarelli in Garry Marshall’s 1950s sitcom “Happy Days”. The king of cool was known for his white t-shirts, black leather jackets and slicked back hair.
And now 76-year-old Winkler is auctioning off one of the original jackets on December 8 at Bonhams Los Angeles. The jacket he sells has been in his possession for decades, while another was sold to the Smithsonian in 1980. But don’t worry, fans, he still has one more to keep at home.
A portion of the proceeds from the sale will support the nonprofit This Is About Humanity, co-founded by her daughter, Zoe Winkler.
The jacket will be sold with a full Fonzie set, including jeans, T-shirt and motorcycle boots. The outfit has an estimated value of $ 50,000 to $ 70,000.
Winkler also sells a Ghostface mask from the 1996 teen slasher movie “Scream”, in which the actor played the main Himbry. The mask has an estimated value of $ 20,000 to $ 30,000.
As to why the “Barry” star suddenly discharges memories, he recently told The Post that, during the coronavirus pandemic, he “finally realized that I am a hoarder.”
“I have this space away from everything and there were 27 to 30 boxes, all my memories, my loot. I didn’t even realize what I had. I haven’t opened these boxes for years. Bonhams came and went through it all, â€he said. “I had a [Fonzie] jacket they made me. The first was stolen from the costume department. So they made six. He also revealed that a jacket had its liner removed for the episode “Jump the Shark” so Fonzie could go jet skiing.
While the show aired, Marshall and Winkler both received two jackets each, while the fifth went to the Smithsonian. (A sixth, he told The Hollywood Reporter, was reportedly “stolen from Paramount’s costume department – it was the very first one I wore.”)
“I found in this box my jeans, two T-shirts that I was wearing [as Fonzie] and the boot I originally wore in New York on ‘The Lords of Flatbush’ with Sly Stallone, â€he told The Post. “I like to take something from one production and take it with me to another. I took the motorcycle engineer boots with me that I bought from Modell on 23rd Street to wear like Fonz.
“I have my entire collection of t-shirts from every show I produced [and] every piece of booty from the shows I’ve appeared on, including talk shows, â€Winkler added.
Winkler can then be seen in the Wes Anderson film “The French Dispatch”. He recently spoke to The Post about the eccentric filmmaker and what it was like on set.
“You don’t say anything. You are learning Wes’ language. This man is a visionary. Remember those EF Hutton commercials, “When EF Hutton talks, people listen?” It’s the setting for a Wes Anderson movie. The accessories are from Germany, the customers are from Italy, the makeup artists are from England, the drivers are from France – and when he speaks, everyone listens, â€said Winkler.
“We had a wonderful time and [Anderson] create a family, â€he added when asked about the atmosphere during the shoot. “You are in a foreign country, in a beautiful city with these blue roofs that you see through the leafless trees because it’s winter, oh my God!
